Effortlessly fluent and seemingly immune to the dead-ends typically inherent to the process of composition, Luke Steele has always flirted with a tendency towards frenetic over-expression. Though Lovers is unafraid to use its big guns—the choirs and murky atmospherics are always lying in reserve—it’s the studied pitch of their delivery, the discipline and honesty of its manoeuvrings around the twin themes of love and mortality, that really makes it worthwhile.
