The 'Soap Opera' Continues For Gruff Rhys' Album Launch!
You could certainly never accuse Gruff Rhys of not following through on an idea or concept. The moonlighting Super Furry Animal was the driving force (if you'll pardon the pun) behind the knowing '80s synthpop shtick of 2008's Stainless Style album, the Welshman's ace collaboration with Boom Bip based on the life and times of John DeLorean. And who can forget the now-infamous SFA 'bingo gigs' from a few years back - a venture that would routinely break down mid-show as Rhys and bandmates struggled to remember the lyrics to the likes of 'Chupacabras'!
Now he's taking a similarly tongue-in-cheek approach to his forthcoming solo LP, and has just announced what can only be described as a unique 'concept gig' to launch the record. Hotel Shampoo is named after the miniature hotel Rhys has reportedly built from the bags of complimentary bathroom products he's amassed from years of touring. The album is set for release on February 14, to coincide with a pretty extensive UK tour. But anyone who doesn't want to wait that long can book in to Blackpool's Gresham Hotel on Sunday February 13 and avail of a special Hotel Shampoo family package that includes bed, breakfast and a signed CD copy of the album. Oh yeah, and admission to that evening's launch gig, which will take place in the hotel's fifty-capacity ballroom.
Apparently the hotel has a special association with Welsh artists, having been set up many years ago by famous Welsh-language pop duo Tony ac Aloma. As Rhys explains: "The Gresham Hotel is to Welsh Pop what The Hilton, Las Vegas is to Elvis & co.". And who are we to argue with that?!? More details about the gig, as well as the various packages (single/twin/double) available, can be found over on Gruff's website. One thing we know is that check-out time at The Gresham is 10am, so there'll be no dilly-dallying the morning after! I wonder will shower caps be provided though...
Gruff Rhys will release a new single taken from Hotel Shampoo, the wonderfully-named 'Sensations in The Dark', next week via Turnstile Music. Check out the madcap video (and free download) for lead single 'Shark Ridden Waters' below:
