My Life In Records by Our Brother The Native's Joshua Bertram

One third of Our Brother The Native - and the third who provides vocals, samples, guitar, harmonium, sax - Joshua Bertram gives Ragged Words a walk through his precociously young life in records (dude only turned 20 this year...). Or as Joshua tells us: "here is a list of terrible bands from my youth, enjoy :)"

Kitty – Spit (Artemis, 2000)

I just had a crush on these girls back in my basement kid-goth phase. Now I have moved on to having crushes on more upstanding girl bands such as Pocahaunted and The Vivian Girls.

Korn – Follow the Leader (Sony, 1998)

This album had guest appearances by Ice Cube and FRED DURST and a cheech and chong cover, talk about a platinum record. Plus ‘Freak On A Leash’ was my jam, that weird vocal thing he did in the break down changed the way I looked at music forever. Korn was definitely my favorite band back then.

System of a Down – System of a Down (Sony, 1999)

“Sugar” and “War” such amazing songs, this band was so crazy, got to love the spazzy chaos. A couple of my friends and I still jam these songs for some nice nostalgic memories.

Smash Mouth – Fush Yu Mang (Interscope, 1997)

I loved going to the roller rink and skating around in our roller skates eating pizza and singing along to ‘Walking on the Sun’. It was my first introduction to SKA, haven’t been able to turn down SKA ever since. Sun Ra, nahhhh more like SUN SKA

Rage Against The Machine – The Battle of Los Angeles (Song, 1999)

“Sleep now in the fire” has such a killer guitar part. Got to love the RAGE, started getting into politics with this record.

Limp Bizkit – Significant Other (Interscope, 1999)

“Sometimes you don’t really know why, you just want to justify ripping someone’s head off” HELLO total rager song, loved moshing to this album. LONG LIVE RAP ROCK! And yes I did it all for the nookie…at least I was hoping I would know what nookie felt like.

Blink 182 – Enema of the State (MCA, 1999)

Still to this day one of my favorite albums ever, every song is so perfect. It’s like the 90’s Dark Side of the Moon. Good long tour driving music.

Goo Goo Dolls – Dizzy Up The Girl (Warner Bros, 1998)

Oh this album used to bring me to tears, so emotional. My mom liked this record as well, I remember listening to it while she drove me around to lazer tag and soccer practice. I also remember being really drunk with my friends in high school and doing acoustic renditions of the tracks ‘Broadway’ and ‘Slide’

Backstreet Boys – Backstreet Boys (Jive, 1996)

“Quit playing games with my heart” …enough said right, I remember jamming this CD in elementary school with all my friends. Some of those lyrics strike a really deep chord in my heart still to this day. OMG NICK CARTER, did someone say dreamboat?

NSYNC - *NSYNC (RCA, 1998)

Definitely was so excited about their dance moves and their wonderfully groomed hair. And of course Justin Timberlake, got to represent for my boy! JT is still one of my all time FAVS, he can do ANYTHING!
