In The Bag, My Sad Captains: Here & Elsewhere
What's it called? It’s called ‘Here & Elsewhere’. we wanted to avoid calling it after a song, but it seemed to sum everything up so we relented. it feels fairly appropriate: the songs deal in the comfort of home and the possibilities of the other, and those words look good written down and sound good out loud.
Where, when and with whom was it recorded? It was recorded in fits and starts from summer last year, and we finally finished it all up in December. It took quite a while, because it seems to take us a long time to do anything for some reason. We made it with Paul Jones at Random Colours in North London; he recorded a single with our buddies Fanfarlo which we liked the sound of so we tracked him down. And a fine job he made of it too.
What can we expect? Well, we wanted to make an album that sounded more like the band we heard in our heads than the band we heard when we played our records. We’d done two singles previously and they kind of highlighted the pop side of what we do - focusing on the harmonies, scrubbing up the guitars to a sheen – but somehow lost a bit of the mystery. This record gives things more space and is all the more interesting for it I think. its got a good flow and feels like a cohesive whole rather than a collection of songs. It's very much a record with a beginning, a middle and an end. I think it's quite pretty and melodic, and is hopefully something that people can live inside for a little while.
When's it due out? 11th May.
When will it leak!? We are sending it out far and wide, so probably quite soon. I'm not massively concerned about it though - it's gonna happen and the more people that hear it the better really, and hopefully people will use that as gateway into supporting the band somehow. it's just a case of trying to make the record work around that. if I had to put a date on it, I'd go for...5th April.
