Frightened Rabbit's The Midnight Organ Fight
Frightened Rabbit's Scott Hutchison gives Ragged Words a track by track guide to The Midnight Organ Fight, out today (14/04/08)
1. The Modern Leper
Disease seems to be fairly prevalent on this record, and I'm not sure why. I do feel that heartache is one of the worst, least curable diseases around. It may not be life threatening but it can certainly make life seem pointless at times. This song is asking this person why they keep coming back, even though they know your have so many faults and that you are essentially falling to bits. It’s not a healthy cycle, but there's something so addictive about this person that you just boomerang back to one another.
2. I Feel Better
It’s about the recovery from the disease. Trying to figure out what to do with your new found 'freedom' and finding a positive way of saying 'I'm really lonely now'. Sometimes things have to get worse before they get better, but it always gets there, and is often better than before. I feel like an agony aunt....
3. Good Arms vs Bad Arms
You don't want the love of your life to be with anyone else, full stop. It hurts like hell and you hate that other guy for no other reason than the fact that he is with her. A moment of seeing red and throwing the rattle out of the pram.
4.Fast Blood
Just about having a boner for someone basically. No other way to put it.
5. Old Old Fashioned
It’s about dancing in old buildings by a good crackling fire with the person you love. There is nothing better than that. Especially after listening to the first three tracks.
6. The Twist
This is not really a personal one. It’s about how adults will still act like teenagers if there's enough booze flying around and you are lonely enough. Sometimes just a look or a wee brush with someone can make your night. It’s not necessarily about anything more than dancing at a disco.
7. Bright Pink Bookmark
Instrumental
8. Head Rolls Off
Believe what you like, but once your dead, you only have what you left behind to define your life. This song is about the struggle to make sure that you have a positive effect on the world whilst you’re alive. I think about death a lot.
9. My Backwards Walk
Totally nabbed this rhythm from Adam Ant. This one explains itself fairly well over the course of the 3 minutes or so. It’s hard to completely let go of someone. You hate them for that in a weird way.
10. Keep Yourself Warm
Again, this one's not really about me, ‘cos I'm not much of a one night stander. Some of my friends have been though and they used to complain about how rubbish that night could be. But they did it again and again. Didn't make much sense to me. Booze has a lot to answer for.
11. Extrasupervery
Instrumental
12. Poke
This is me trying to do justice to a really wonderful part of my life. That particular part may be over now, but it’s important to let someone know what things meant, and still mean to you.
13. Floating In The Forth
I've never seriously contemplated suicide, but its surprising when you ask, just how many people have their scenario already thought out. Perhaps I just hang around with miserable bastards all the time. This song is me running through that scenario (travelling to the Forth Road Bridge just north of Edinburgh and leaping off) in my head and deciding that its not such a great idea after all. It’s important to let our label know that I'll be writing another album instead of killing myself. This one's for FatCat.
14. Who'd You Kill Now
Instrumental
