Nick Hemming's (The Leisure Society) albums of the decade
Really difficult to decide, but fun to do...

Such a densely layered album, bursting with ideas, all underpinned by incredible melodies. Genius.
I could also have picked either of the last two Grizzly Bear albums but this album appeals more to my pop-song sensibility. Phantom Other is a mind-blowing journey of a song, up there with the great Beatles recordings in my opi
My favourite Neil Hannon album. So many great songs, not least of which is Our Mutual Friend. Joby Talbot's orchestral arrangements are sublime.
James Mercer is definitely one of the most interesting & poetic lyricists in pop music. I love all three Shins albums but this is probably the most complete.
I was obsessed with this album when it came out, one of the first albums of the decade. It's got a great balance of heartbreaking melodies (Daisies Of The Galaxy) & songs that make you want to jump around the room (Tiger In My Tank). Mark Everett has a really world-weary voice - not surprising considering the things he's been through - but his songs never sound miserable.
After hearing this album I went alone to his sold-out Shepherd's Bush Empire show. I ended up paying the last £70 I had to my name for a touted ticket & it was worth every penny.
My listening pleasure was definitely enhanced after seeing the I Am Trying To Break Your Heartdocumentary. There are some really strong songs on this album & some of Jeff Tweedy's finest lyrics. Great pop/art created amid conflict, as is so often the case.
I hated The Streets when his first single came out but this album really won me over. Great storytelling in a modern, simple language. Some fantastic tunes too.
Fragile & beautifully retro-futuristic (in a Space Odyssey kind of way).
I used to listen to this album all the time when it first came out. The guitar sounds are amazing as are the Brian Wilsonesque flourishes in the arrangements. It's epic & understated at the same time, an album I'll never tire of.
