Delorentos' albums of the decade
Nial was banging on about these for ages, but i like to find music myself, and i i'm glad i did and this is just a great album, with bright smart lyrics and a perfect ear for uncomplicated, optimistic sounds.
I got a mixtape from my friend in New York around 2004 and it had a Sufjan Stephens song on it that lodged in my head, so when i found this album and fell in love with it. Some people argue it's orchestral arrangements are unimaginative, but it has a childishness that i love. I forced it on everyone i knew until everyone else loved it too.
Quite simply, one of my favourite albums of all time. I loved it when i got it, but during a shitty break-up a few years later i rediscovered it and a new depth emerged, a strong album about love from a female perspective that nursed me on many rainy bus journeys.
Again a band i discovered on a mix cd, and i played the album to death. The lyrics are a bit nonsensical, and some songs sound kinda unrefined, but that's part of its charm. It's also one of those albums that has a feeling from start to finish, a mood that pulls you in.
After the release of Amnesiac i thought perhaps Radiohead had done their best work. I'd loved Kid A (which i could have easily added here too) but didn't like Hail to the Thief, Amnesiac or the live album.... but in a interview with Q, Shakira said "Radiohead will produce one more incredible album. I will wait for Radiohead". So, i took her advice, and was rewarded with this - arguably their best. Well, argued by me.
Great album. It sounds like the best sweaty underground party you didn't hear about in a place you haven't heard of and has one of the best dancefloor singles ever - 'House Of Jealous Lovers'.
It's become a cliche, but it's still a brilliant album. Hopefully it's not a once off, Neon Bible was a bit of a disappointment... but i will wait for Arcade Fire, As Shakira would say.
When this album came out i drove my parents mad by playing it as loud as i could as much as i could and the album also has one of the best openings to an album - Kill all hippies / Accelerator and exterminator. It was also the last release on Creation. Best Scream album too. I wish Kevin Sheilds would guest with us.
Funny, i never listen past track eight on this album, but the first side is the best side A a British Act has produced that i've heard. Side B, well, you can take it or leave it. I've seen them live and they've always irritated me, and i wish they didn't have to be so annoyingly trying all the time, but this is still a great album.
This is an album that inspires me to write better music, write better melodies and shows that music can be universal, uplifting and comforting without having to know what anythings about. I'm afraid to look up the lyrics in case they're total crap. I'm better off not knowing.
