Accents rarely come out as wonderfully distinctive in song as those north of the border. Whether it’s the dismal delivery of Arab Strap or the sunnier singing of Teenage Fanclub, it’s one that (bar The Proclaimers) rarely grates. Edinburgh born Euan Robinson subtly strikes his heavy vowels in a genre that embraces distinction more than any other. Adopting the best one-man band name since Badly Drawn Boy then, his particular brand of folk music is one rich in charm and lyrical finesse.
Stars of Sunday League is the first public outing of songs written while cycling about London late at night or in snatched moments between a day job working at the House of Commons. The moniker reveals an attention to detail and interest in the everyday that is felt throughout its protagonist’s songs. On ‘I Still Like Football, as well as the fondness in the title, he sings “I still like cheese on my chips, I still like picking off the scabs I get from when I skint my knees.” The track entitled ‘Stars of Sunday League’ is just as rich in imagery and somewhat of an anthem for those of us who spent so many Sunday’s in December flapping about on a muddy field.
Fortunately he also happens to have the heart aching melodies to match. Standout track from the standard MySpace quadruplet ‘Sailing Ships on the Forth’ is about as gorgeous and seemingly effortless a song as you’ll find. Euan best sums up the approach, telling us “It’s a bit like people falling in love, sometimes a lyric can be lonely for years and then a melody will come along that just fits and then that’s it.”
Stars of Sunday League may have only appeared on stage a dozen times but cramming spots at Bestival and End of the Road into such a modest outlay isn’t bad going. It also never hurts having Emmy The Great - the Emmy Lou Harris to any modern day Gram Parsons folk musician - doing your backing vocals. But then as Euan Robinson says, “it’s all about the songs.” As you should find out, they’re very easy to fall for.
