Originally known as Ryan McPhun & The Ruby Suns, this effortlessly inventive band formed when the aptly named McPhun left California for Auckland. The New Zealanders signed to Memphis Industries in the UK and re-released their self-titled debut album in 2006, a year after it's domestic release on Lil' Chief. Sea Lion, which quite perfected their Beach Boys meets African rhythms sounds, was released a year later and this time picked up by Sub Pop in the US. The more claustrophobic but equally delightful Fight Softly followed in 2010.
